new computer - no case?

i built a new "black friday" super budget computer.  didnt want to waste any money on a case.. so.. a buddy of mine (thanks Alan!) gave me an old computer that i decided to "modify" to fit my new stuff.

i still need to mount the SSD and do a little more cable management but for spending 20 minutes in the garage using nothing but scraps.. i am very pleased!

if wishes were fishes..

...or some crap like that.

'Dearest Cecilia. The story can resume.'
Atonement (2007)

nothing more than a glorified .gif but these things are a wonder and i would be making them all day long if i could.  our version of the harry potter photograph i guess.  ive collected some good ones over the years.  there is something special and remarkable in a moving image.

Sun-Earth Connection

this is where all our scientific efforts should be spent.  ive been talking about this for years...

a better way

in front of my neighbor's house @ 3am last night,
there has to be a better way to live than this...

different kind of bike ride

i think ill make one of these someday.

House of the Sun

Beautiful video.  Would love to spend some time up here someday.  All I need to do is move to Maui...

interview with matt whitehead

wonder if i will ever adventure like this...

I wish every news article I came across could be in this format.  Beautiful.  Neat story as well.

I crave it.  Desperately.

tell me if im strange

i just spent over 2 hours watching videos of the traditional japanese shave and also the traditional turkish shave.  i was completely mesmerized.  gave me the chills even.

in bolivia haircuts always involved using a razor blade to trim up the sideburns, around the ears and back of the neck.  i always enjoyed that.  i have never had a full face shave with a blade but always imagined it would be great.  after watching the videos.. dang.. i wish i could hire a japanese master barber full-time.

the traditional japanese shave looked amazing!  i watched this guy use a blade on the entire face!  forehead included, it was crazy.  he also used some kind of small stick to carve out the ears and then a different tool.. to, i dont know buff the ear canal?  anyway it just looked so cool.

the turkish barber had some cool tricks too.  he bladed the face twice.  then used a tool that was set on fire at the end and used to bounce a flame on the ear to remove all the hair.  crazy.  there was also hot pine pitch painted onto the nose for some reason.

anyway.. lets just say there is a new item on my bucket list.

man of steel

it has been a really long time since i was this excited for a film.

the soundtrack comes out on the 11th, the movie on the 14th.

something terrible has happened.  recently my spam folder has seen new additions to the usual garbage.  i am now receiving dog food coupons.  how in the 9 hells did that happen?

its been a good long run... but no email address is forever, its time to retire the legacy...

and this is just the beginning...

reconciling time

this blog is about a dead mosquito.. and how i reconcile myself with time.  im not sure what you were hoping for when you clicked what ever link that brought you here.. actually thats a really good question, why do you read my blog?

i sorta doubt anyone will relate to the things im going to talk about.  perhaps i can give you some interesting perspective if anything.  if that doesnt catch your interest, here is a bit of entertainment thats easier to digest.  moving on...

once upon a time, i did things. i went to work 5 days a week. church on sundays. adventures and projects on weekends. i had a life. i was even married once. i guess these things relate to the structure of the common modern life. but that was all a long time ago. things are different for me now. its been several years since i had any of that in my life.

i dont work any more. i dont have enough energy for church. im certainly not spending entire saturdays climbing mountains and taking photos like i used to. in fact i rarely leave the house at all. once in a while on a restless night ill have it in me to go for a walk around the neighborhood. lately im pretty spent after walking down to the grocery store for some orange juice. the rest of the time i save my strength for social engagements, spending time with my transcendent girlfriend or hanging out with old friends.

the significance is that on a weekly basis i dont really have anywhere that i am supposed to be.  i am entirely neglected by the ebb and flow of a busy world.  the effect is that i have wholly lost track of the days. and of time in general. it means that at any given moment i probably have no idea what day it is. when was the last time you had that feeling on a continual basis? im guessing it was summer time around 6th grade. today you have something nearly always pushing and pulling you to this and that. work deadlines constantly on your mind. 5 different alarms you pay attention to in a 24 hour period. if you have kids its a never ending schedule of here and there. church comes around every sunday with few surprises. all these things and many more keep you firmly attached to the revolutions of the planet. i simply no longer relate. i dont even sleep every day. im usually fully awake when one day fades into the next. the days blend together like crazy, making it very difficult for me to keep track of time and days of the week. i need nearly constant reminders.  some of you may have noticed...

utah weather doesnt help much. we all know how it is. you never know what it will be. snow? sunburns? both? i prefer the summer time but even that doesnt require much from me as im going to be wearing the same shoes and clothes either way most likely.

however, there is at least one thing that requires a firm reckoning from me. today is such a day. tonight as i sit here reading the reactions of people to the changes Adobe has made to their software. as i listen to the latest music released from the new superman movie coming june 14th. as i look at photos posted on twitter from some of my favorite photographers and as i read excerpts from jim gaffigans book that was just released today... a mosquito made the fatal mistake of flying in front of my glowing computer screen.

its now 2013 and ive just made first contact...

mosquitoes are a big deal to me, for a few reasons. more and more in my old age i have come to view my enfeebled body as a temple (i guess). mosquitoes represent a vile trespass. a violation that makes me very uneasy. just the idea of it upsets me. besides that i try to limit the already ridiculously high levels of general discomfort in my life. sleep is already a difficult enough task, adding the nuisance of insect bites is... grief i dont need...

so what does this mean? it means i close the open window in my hot room. i make sure doors are shut tight. i make sure windows are shut. i hunt them (literally) in my room before i lie down. i unwillingly adopt a hyper alerted awareness of every tiny itch or faint microscopic sensation on my skin. i am a hostage.  basically i live in a general state of paranoia whether im indoors or outdoors from now till about november.

here is the little devil.

and the world spins madly on...

another weekend

my weekend looked like this

but it felt more like this

we made an attempt to watch the Lyrids Meteor Shower.  it was awesome.  we got a flat tire INSTANTLY upon our arrival.  but that is to be expected on our adventures as of late.  we were pretty hardcore.  the moon didnt go down till after 4am.  we stayed up late enough to see a handful of meteors before we fell asleep.

mission accomplished.

well done Adam Daly, Matt Dorton & Myself.  the August Perseids should be a bit warmer.  and im looking forward to it.

fortune cookies

a few cookie fortunes i have kept for some reason.
mostly i just love that the word was "Electricity"

no idea why i keep these sometimes.
got this one just a couple days ago, made me laugh so hard.

how was your weekend?
mine was like this:

i bought a hat - snatched it right off this lady manikin in fact

i also had an accomplice

she is quite fine if you ask me

this is the face we make when we go to concerts together

imagine dragons puts on a good show, so does Mi Ranchito

Black Holes (revisited)

3 years ago i wrote an absolutely "riveting blog" trying to explain the dubious beginnings of the black hole concept. i doubt any of you actually read it but anyway, i wrote that blog feeling inspired after reading a bunch of stuff written by the mathematician named stephen crothers, who is brilliant by the way. today i found myself catching up on some thunderbolts videos from their latest conference (i seriously hope i get to go to one someday). pretty much every thunderbolts video is amazing but my favorite from today was definitely this critique from the man himself.

if you have a few minutes i highly recommend these 2 videos. enjoy.

Russian meteor

first of all, rad.  of course i feel bad about all the related injuries but i also feel an overwhelming sense of RAD!  i was lucky enough to be on twitter at just the right time the night that all these videos started to roll out from people that saw it.  i absolutely love it.  wish i could have been there.  wish i could have seen it.  even more i wish i could have heard and felt the blast.  it was no different than lightning.  just bigger.  awesomer. lightning.  this planet is amazing.  stars are amazing.  but that which creates and governs them all sets my soul on fire.  the cosmic thunderbolt.

"It is the thunderbolt that steers the Universe." - Heraclitus

2012 supercut

i wonder if i'll ever get to make one of these...

minus that utter nonsense at the end about saving a pet.  judas.

i just bumped into this article: about how a new verizon patent that would be able to send customized commercials to your TV based on what a built in IR camera and microphone would be able to see and hear.  just wondering if you guys would be ok with this?  on one hand i absolutely love the idea of never seeing commercials that do not relate to me.  never seeing another dog food commercial for instance might be enough for me to sign up immediately.  but the idea of being watched on that level just creeps me the hell out.  i understand that we are already be watched and targeted online in a big way but this is pretty alarming.  check out all the juicy details in the link.
but what do i care.  i havnt watched any significant amount of TV for at least a decade  ;)

If I had a 4 year old...

this is totally what we would be doing.  how cool is this kid!?
